Red-Letter Journey: Matthew 5:38-48

Matthew 5:38-48

Jesus’ teachings against violence are perhaps the most difficult for people to grasp, the most contrary to our human and cultural bent.  Perhaps no teaching of Jesus’ gets as much excuses as this one does.

It makes sense though. Jesus knew that revenge is a cycle. It does not solve the core problem and it destroys families and communities.  Jesus taught a new way of peace and love that differentiates his followers from the system.  It’s not anything special when you love those who also love you, he says, but if you love those who treat you like trash and pray for those who run you down, that is something incredible– something that proclaims God’s kingdom.

lesmis1Maybe that’s why Jean Val Jean granting Javert his life at the end of Les Miserables is so moving. Despite being harassed and having his life ruined by this overzealous police officer, Val Jean still extends love and mercy, which is far more moving and shocking than, “You ruined my life, and now I will take yours.”  A lot is meant in the words, “To love another person is to see the face of God.” Because God is Love.
